God’s promise, a rainbow, after a quick shower Monday afternoon.
This week I’m on Hatteras Island at a writing retreat. I’m here to begin a novella for a Christmas collection with other Scrivenings Press authors and sharing the week with five other Christian writers.
This retreat has been planned since last year. (I wrote about my Hatteras week last year. Here’s a blog post, if you’re interested in reading.) I vacillated about coming for a while because of the pandemic and other reasons, but then my publisher asked me to write a novella for a Christmas collection.
I’ve never written a novella before or signed a contract before I had a story finished. I saw the invitation as a God confirmation when my publisher told me all the stories would be set on beaches. She said, “Why don’t you set yours on the Outer Banks?
So here I am.
But, friends, all I have is the setting and the time frame (autumn to Christmas). I write love stories, so, of course, there’s that perimeter. But. Everything else is a great big question mark.

If I cross your mind in the next few days, here are some prayer requests for me:
that I’ll hear God’s ideas for the story
that I’ll have courage to talk to locals, if necessary, and ask the best questions for the story
that God will protect from me from the wrong ideas
that I’ll use my time wisely while I’m here
that I’ll be in tune with the Holy Spirit
and for clear discernment for the writing.
I’m here to “catch” the story God has for me.
My assignment is a little overwhelming, especially added to my regular life with responsibilities at home, with my parents, with church and community groups…It’s a lot. Just like your life.
Here’s one verse I’m clinging to especially this week–Matthew 9:28. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” Jesus asked this question of the blind men.
I know God can and will enable me to do all He brings before me. He’ll do that for you, too!
