I attended the Writers’ Police Academy in Greensboro, North Carolina, a few years ago when Rescued Hearts was still just a beginning scene in my head.
WRITERS’ POLICE ACADEMY CLASSES
Undercover cops, a chief of police, FBI agents, ATF agents, and EMT professionals taught informative classes on several topics. Topics ranged from crime scene processing, to prostitution stings, to the psychology of being a cop, to going deep undercover with retired ATG special agent, Bill Queen. Queen infiltrated a violent motorcycle gang, the Mongols, for over two years and shared some of his harrowing experiences with his class.
Some attendees scored ride-alongs in police cruisers and ambulances. Others participated in pretend exercises like breaching buildings.
The academy team enacted a mock accident on the first morning. First, policemen arrived on the scene, followed by firemen and then EMT professionals. Did you know that first responders follow a SMART Triage Technique using color-coded victim tags? These professionals follow a kind of medical/law enforcement choreography. They worked side by side, doing their own jobs.
THANK YOU!
During this long weekend, I learned valuable, fascinating information, but my main take away is gratitude. I’m grateful for people who stand in the gap between me and people who play by different rules, who don’t follow society’s rule, who want to harm rather than help.
Thank you to all the first responders who run toward danger instead of away from it, who willing put themselves in harm’s way, who care about keeping us safe. You are true heroes.
