In the past few weeks, it seems that the world has gone upside down. Everything seems changed with Coivd-19 commanding almost every minute of air time on every news program. I captured several pictures around my home that speaks to continuity in these unsettling times. We added this flag last year to the banks of our pond, and people comment all the time about how much they love seeing it.
My cousin, Mel, lives across the road from me. He’s preparing the soil for gladiola bulbs. Hundreds of bulbs, in fact. He brings an enormous bunch to our family reunion every year in June. I pull out my largest vase to hold all the striking, blossom-packed stems. The reunion status may be on a wait-and-see status, but those gladiolas are going to grow and bloom if we’re still on a stay-at-home order or not.
These pansies have been blooming in our front porch planter since last fall. Guess what? They still are. What’s with the coat hangers, you may ask? One of our dogs, Ziva, likes to curl up and sleep right on top of my pansies even though we have a pretty nice dog house for her and Captain. The April heat here in North Carolina may zap these beauties, but Covid-19 won’t.
We received a package in the mail on Saturday. I love real mail. Packages are even better. Email still works, but so does snail mail! Do you know someone who might need a dose of encouragement? How about your friends or relatives at nursing homes who aren’t connected on-line? A stamped envelope still works. Hey, that sounds like a good homeschool project, don’t you think?
The Important Part
Finally, here’s a picture of real constancy. God’s Word is still true. Still gives comfort. Still gives wisdom. Still offers hope. Still speaks truth.
This Bible is opened to two of my favorite chapters, Isaiah 40 and 41. Here are some of the verses:
“Comfort, comfort, my people. says your God.” 40:1
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” 40:8
“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in balance?” 40:12
“…He Who brings out the starry host one by one and calls them each by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” 40:26
“…He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding on one can fathom.” 40:28
“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” 40:29
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” 41:10
Take comfort in the real truth. It will not change with the next news cycle.
(The Scripture verses are from the NIV, 1984.)
