After many years of being apart, Penn reconnected with Abby, her best friend from childhood, and Christmas is a good time to think about old friends.
I just reconnected with an old friend from grad school. Terri came into my life at a crucial point a long time ago. I’d just had my heart cracked, and I was floundering a little in the social department. All my college friends had graduated, and I needed something besides literature and writing apprehension (my thesis topic) to keep my mind off my drama.
Terri and her roommate, Trina, happened exactly when I needed them. We talked about important stuff like haircuts and lip gloss and bathing suits. We went out dancing and met new people. We took trips—in fact, Terri met her husband on one of those excursions to Washington, DC.
With moves and marriages and children, our friendship morphed into an occasional Christmas card. With the popularity of Facebook, Terri and I found each other. Living close again, we met for lunch and continued about where we left off decades ago.
