When my daughters were very young, I’d buy white tennis shoes and then paint them to match their outfits. I saw shoes like this either in a boutique or in a catalog and decided I could make my own.
First, I always sprayed the shoes with starch and let them dry. I heard the starch would help in cleaning the shoes later. I’m not completely sure that’s true.
Next, use fabric paint available at craft stores. Let them dry for twenty-four hours before wearing.

I loved painting those shoes and dressing my girls. I thought of all the clothes and accessories I made for them while I wrote the character of Mary Wade.

These shoes are a little bigger than the ones I used to paint, but you get the idea. I found these white shoes on the clearance rack!
