In honor of National Bowling Day, the second Saturday of August, I’ll share some back story to one of the scenes from Forever Music.
On New Year’s Eve, Josie and her brothers go bowling. After she rolls three strikes in a row, the brothers dare her to try again. If she makes another strike, they’ll give her $100.
That story is straight out of our history, except I was the bowler and my husband was the one trying to rattle me. Years ago, we took the children bowling, and for some strange reason—because I am the least athletic person in the house—my arm got hot.
I rolled three strikes in a row. No one including me could believe it. I hadn’t bowled in years, but I was making up for it that night and enjoying being the darling of the pins. My husband challenged me. “If you can roll another strike on your next turn, I’ll give you one hundred dollars.” The children loved it. “Do it, Mommy! Do it!” Excitement and anticipation crackled in our pit.
Bowling challenge accepted.
Of course I had to try. It was my turn again, and I wasn’t even nervous. I’ve since come to learn some bowling terms, and a “sizzling turkey,” three strikes in a row, was an enjoyable feat and a record for me.
I rolled the ball right down the middle of the lane and made a quick hundred bucks with my “four-bagger.” The children jumped and screamed and hugged their bowling phenom mom. Kevin and I laughed the rest of the evening. We knew what a crazy fluke it was.
I enjoyed the five crisp twenties in my hand, too.
Tell me about some crazy fluke that happened to you.
