January is the month I peruse seed catalogs and gardening books, just like Daddy used to do. It’s the perfect time to sit and dream about beautiful blooms and plump tomatoes and fragrant herbs greeting me from my garden plot or in planters on my front porch. I love turning the pages with colorful petals and perfect vegetables and new plants I’ve never seen before. I can stare at the pictures and read the descriptions for many nights until I take the plunge and order. Lots of entertainment from a free catalog and old books.
I’ve known myself and my husband for a long time now, so I know how these months from January till mid June play out. We’re excited about the new year and all the possibilities and vow to grow the best batch of whatever yet. We start off strong. We work hard. Then we leave for a week’s vacation, and when we return, our garden has morphed into a jungle. The produce gets lost in the nut grass, dandelions, lambs quarters, and whatever else I can’t name here. Then July gets pretty parched here in North Carolina, and watering the plots and planters are a real and time consuming responsibility.
But now in January, I can dream of straight rows, turned over, dark rich soil and envision the ideal garden. Who knows? Maybe this is the year…
What are you planting this spring?

John gets excited for the catalogs coming in the mail also. He loves to plant new bushes, rather than a garden. But, you just never know….smile.

The catalogs always remind me of Daddy. I’d love to have a grow light, but they’re so expensive! Thanks for reading and commenting!
