One comment we heard a lot when our children were growing up was “your family sure does support each other.” Our family always showed up at events together whether at school or church or the community. Yes, it takes work and juggling schedules, but it’s infinitely worth the effort.
Show up together!
Experience games, concerts, recitals, plays, and volunteer opportunities as a family. Attending these events together strengthens bonds that last for a lifetime. When you and your spouse and all the siblings show up, you’re building love, support, and interest. You’re also creating memories together.
This above picture shows Anna, a senior, and Hattie, a sophomore, on the night Anna kicked the winning goal for their team to win the conference championship outright against our biggest rivals. Both girls played varsity soccer, and their brothers worked the sidelines as ball boys.
Nerves made their dad walk the perimeter of the pitch for the whole game. I cheered from the aluminum bleachers. We were all over the field, but we were there together experiencing a fantastic night that we still talk about more than ten years later. Go here if you want to read the whole account of that kick!
In the next picture, Hattie is surrounded by her siblings on the night she was crowned Homecoming Queen. The boys played in the marching band, and Anna came home from college to be there for Hattie’s big night. So much fun!

Don’t forget to volunteer!
Winning nights are great, but volunteering together is also an important way step to wonderful memories.
In this picture, the boys and I had just finished helping to build this wheelchair ramp for a local resident during a college vacation.
How do you show love to your children? Show up…with the whole family!
