Here’s a picture of my first radio interview at WMPM in Smithfield, North Carolina. I enjoyed the experience back in 2016 when I had only two published novels out in the world, but I was writing the third one. Linda Carroll asked interesting questions and helped me feel comfortable in a new setting.
Radio Stations are cool.
Radio stations have always intrigued me, and I’m excited to feature this industry in my latest novel, Forever Home, which releases next week! The radio station I created in this story is a combination of the cool station featured in the old TV show Northern Exposure and a cool radio show in Pittsburgh, called the Saturday Light Brigade. That show is a program that highlights acoustic music, live performances, on-air games and puzzles, and interviews. The show began on WYEP in Pittsburgh.
Way back in the day, my co-leader and I took our Girl Scout troop to tour the station and meet the Light Brigade people. One Saturday morning, I called in with a limerick I’d written about my mother’s homemade biscuits and fried pork tenderloin. I haven’t listened since we moved from Pittsburgh, but it was always kind of quirky, fun, and positive.

Sam Daniels wants his station in Forever Home to be a community asset where people hear good music, meet their neighbors, receive helpful information, and enjoy each other. Read Forever Home and let me know if he succeeds.
