Summer seems to be the season for lots of travel.
Ellen’s story opens in Galway, Ireland, one of my favorite cities in the world, and I’ve traveled to Paris, New York, London, Toronto, Washington, DC, and San Francisco. My family loves to travel. We’d rather travel than drive a new car. That’s why all of our cars have at least 150,000 miles. I’m serious.
Anyway, we love to travel and have taken some really wonderful trips in the United States as well as abroad. We loved the home exchanging trips (I’ll post on that kind of vacationing soon) and birthday trips and ski trips, but we’d probably agree that the most meaningful trip was the mission trip we took at Thanksgiving, 2005 to Gulfport, Mississippi.
We spent a week mudding out houses ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Wearing protective gear and masks, we battled filth, fatigue, and ferocious, enormous bugs. (Go here if you want to see what I’m talking about http://www.backyardnature.net/n/11/110403wb.jpg.)
But we also had one of our best Thanksgiving dinners ever as we ate off of paper plates under the stars with a soft, Mississippi breeze kissing our cheeks.
Here’s our Christmas card picture from that year:
