Expensive sunglasses—yes or no? do you pay a lot for sunglasses? Ches Windham, of course, owns a pair of Ray-Bans in the beginning of Forever Music. One of the first scenes shows him with paperwork for his pair that got broken at the airport parking lot. They’re a status symbol for him that goes with his brand new car and his gig as a rising-profile attorney at a downtown Charlotte law firm.
According to Google, some Ray-Ban models can go as high as $500. Five hundred dollars?
Back in the Day
Back in high school, I spent $17 on a pair of sweet blue sunglasses from our favorite department store. I bought them for the color and the shape of the lenses. I don’t remember a name brand. The only brand I knew about at that time was Foster Grant because of the “Who’s that behind those Foster Grants?” TV commercials. My mother almost had a fit when she found out how much they cost even though I paid with them with funds from my summer job. They lasted for a couple of months until I sat on them.
My husband buys his shades from the local dollar store. In fact, we stopped at a sunglass booth at the state fair last fall where all models were $5. We each got a pair, and he remarked, “I just spent five times as much as I usually do on sunglasses.”
Selfie Time!
Here’s me wearing my $5 pair. The sun was out and beautiful on Hatteras Island today!
I have friends who swear by Oakleys. They’re expensive, too, with pairs costing over $200. Clearly, these Oakley and Ray-Ban people have never crushed a pair of sunglasses in the front seat of their car.
Show me your sunglasses, cheap or not so cheap, in the comments.
