I wrote the rough draft of this post on April 10th, Good Friday and then promptly forgot it.
I’d been a little melancholy all week because of the stay-at-home order to flatten the Covid-19 curve. The week leading up to holidays are normally packed for me, and Holy Week is no different. Last year, I was busy making plans, studying menus and recipes, securing last-minute invites, checking my Easter Menu and Grocery list that’s saved in my documents.
I love perrusing this list, drawing lines through what I already have in the pantry. Checking off items as I buy them. Scratching off a dish that someone else will bring. To avoid the rush, I usually begin shopping two weeks prior to the holiday.
Last year, we hosted 49 people at Easter. Nope, that number isn’t a typo. We have close family, extended family, friends from work and friends from church. We set up tables all over the house and, if the weather’s nice, on the back porch, too.
A Few Pictures
This year I’d planned to take pictures to use in a blog post as a companion to Forever Music because there’s a scene at the Daniels’ house on Easter enjoying a big lunch and yard games afterward. Here are some pictures I took at our scaled-down, socially-distanced, very quiet Easter celebration this year.
Here’s picture of a bowl of Jello eggs. These family favorites have appeared on our Easter buffet for maybe twenty years now. It’s tradition. We have to have them although Jello is no one’s favorite at our house.
And, of course, our bunny cake. It’s just plain yellow cake mix with white icing (I’d rather have a brown bunny, but I’d never hear the end of it!). My children love the blandness or sameness or comfort of it, so he shows up every year. Both of these traditions are mentioned in Forever Music along with some other Dougherty favorites, but we’ll have to wait till next year for photos.
Our Easter lunch and afternoon, like everyone else’s, was different this year, but guess what?
Still Rejoicing
We still had Easter because Jesus rose that long ago Easter morning. The tomb is empty, and I can celebrate the hope I have in a sure salvation.
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
Alleluia!
